Free Schools

The first rural school was started by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 1981. It was started when Sri Sri observed some local children playing in the dust near The Art of Living Centre. When he saw that they had no access to education he decided to do something to help them. The Art of Living started their service initiatives by providing education to underprivileged rural children in Udayapura Village on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Karnataka. Today this school has become a model for similar 403  free schools, educating over 40000 students across 20 states, that are revolutionizing education in slum, rural and tribal India where child labor and poverty are widespread.

Inspired by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's vision of value education for all, these schools impart education integrated with values.

  • Access to quality education to the children of underprivileged, rural, tribal and remote sections of society
  • Ensure completion of education with an opportunity to be self sufficient
  • Build community partnerships
  • Address the social, economic and cultural barriers that keep children away from school
